Wilton, CT
Wilton is an idyllic New England town with ample opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. A primarily residential community, Wilton had a long history as a dry town. While some restrictions still exist, Wilton has now become friendlier to alcohol service—and new developments promise to invigorate the town’s economy.
How to Get a Liquor Permit in Wilton, CT
Getting a Wilton liquor permit (often called a liquor license) requires navigating both Connecticut's state licensing process as well as local requirements. While the state application is handled through the Department of Consumer Protection, several town-specific rules must be considered.
The Connecticut Liquor Permit Application Process
Applications must be submitted through the CT Department of Consumer Protection's eLicense portal and include documentation for three key areas:
The Backer: The business entity, with financial records and ownership documentation
The Permittee: The individual representing your business
The Location: Where alcohol service will take place
Most applications take 3 to 6 months to process, though provisional permits can be obtained in 3 to 4 weeks for an additional fee. Permit types range from Restaurant Liquor (LIR) to Package Store (LIP) to Café (CAF) permits, and each have associated state fees. For a complete walkthrough of Connecticut's permit process see our guide to Connecticut Liquor Permit applications.
Wilton Liquor Permit Requirements
Due to its history of alcohol restrictions, Wilton is sometimes considered a damp town (i.e. not quite dry, not quite wet). In recent decades, Wilton has liberalized, going as far as to accommodate a local brewery in 2024. In some districts, alcohol-serving establishments need special permits, which includes a site plan review among other local requirements. In 2026, Wilton began requiring special permit applicants submit via their online portal.
Off-Premises Permits
Separation rules apply for package stores, which must be 500 feet away from schools or churches. Furthermore, Connecticut law allocates Wilton a maximum of seven package store permits (one per 2,500 residents). When the cap is reached, aspiring package store owners often acquire existing businesses. To find the current number of package store permits available in Stamford, check the CT Department of Consumer Protection’s database. In addition, Wilton does not allow Grocery Beer Permits.
